What is a
CBT?
CBT (Compulsory Basic
Training) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the high
accident rate for motorcycles. Anyone who wants to ride
a motorbike on the road must first complete a CBT
course. The only exception to this is if you had passed
your car practical test before 1st February 2001, then
you are allowed to ride a moped only without completing
a
CBT course.
The CBT course must be
carried out by a DSA approved instructor and will last
from 4 - 6 hours depending on how you progress through
the course, once the course is completed your CBT
certificate will be valid for 2 years, in which time you
must pass your practical test or retake another CBT
course after that time.
There are 5 elements to
the CBT course:
Element A (Introduction)
Element B (Practical on-site Training)
Element C (Practical on-site Riding)
Element D (Practical on-road Training)
Element E (Practical on-road Riding)
Each of the above
elements must be completed before you can move on to the
next part of the course. As all students learn at
different speeds you may have to spend more time on one
element before moving on to the next.
When all parts of the
course has been completed and your instructor feels that
you have reached the required standard you will be
issued with your CBT certificate.
